Sarah Bennett, Nature Explorers Derbyshire

Sarah Bennett is the founder of Nature Explorers Derbyshire, delivering Forest School and Outdoor Therapeutic provision for children across the district.

Working freelance, Sarah provides specialist outdoor therapy for children both in and out of school, supporting those experiencing anxiety, trauma, SEND needs, and the effects of deprivation. Her work focuses on creating safe, positive experiences in nature; helping children build confidence, emotional resilience, and a stronger connection to the world around them.

Bolsover’s green spaces play a central role in Sarah’s work. From pockets of woodland within local schools to wider open spaces across the district, she uses the natural environment on children’s doorsteps to deliver meaningful, therapeutic experiences. Sarah is also a provider for Derbyshire County Council and Diocese schools, supporting some of the most vulnerable young people in the community.

Alongside her professional work, Sarah has a deep passion for local heritage and wellbeing. She actively promotes heritage-based wellbeing walks, including the Blue Plaque Walk in Bolsover, using history as a way to connect people with place while encouraging physical and mental wellbeing.

One of Sarah’s favourite locations is Back Hills, where the historic conduit houses sit along the embankment. Rich with wildlife, seasonal fruits for foraging, and stunning views across the landscape, it’s a place she feels strongly about protecting. Sarah previously helped deliver the installation of information boards and benches along the route, helping make the space more accessible and welcoming for everyone.

For Sarah, Bolsover’s greatest strengths lie in its people and its green spaces — and in how closely the two are connected.

Three words to describe Bolsover?
Heritage. Community. Home.

“It has life, history, green spaces, community and warmth. It’s my home — and the green spaces of Back Hills and local school woodlands are where I work every day.”
