There’s something special about a winter walk - crisp air, golden light, and the crunch of leaves (or frost!) underfoot. Whether you’re chasing a moment of peace, walking the dog, or finding a family adventure close to home, Bolsover’s countryside is made for it.

With the North Derbyshire & North Nottinghamshire (NDNN) App, exploring is easier than ever. You’ll find a fantastic collection of short, scenic trails, all under 5 miles, designed to get you outdoors and connected to nature, heritage, and wellbeing this winter.

Here are some of our favourites;

Langwith Loop – 4 miles

Start at Langwith Station and take in meadows, woodlands and quiet country lanes on this peaceful circular walk. Follow the Archaeological Way through Poulter Country Park, wander into the charming hamlet of Whaley, and explore Scarcliffe Park, an ancient deer park filled with archaeological secrets.

Thank you to the Langwith Society for helping bring this trail to life.

Nightingales & Sand Martins – 1.5 miles

Perfect for families, this short wildlife walk at Pleasley Pit Country Park follows all-weather trails through a haven for birds and nature. Spot the headstocks, discover Nature’s Friends along the way, and enjoy gentle climbs with rewarding views.

Pleasley–Teversal Poetry Triangle – 4.5 miles

A trail that gets your legs and brain working! Starting at the Teversal Trail Visitor Centre, follow clues and discover poems inspired by the landscape as you wander through beautiful countryside. You’ll pass Pleasley Pit Country Park and cross paths with the Archaeological Way – rich in history and inspiration.

Poulter Country Park – 2.1 miles

Short, steeped in history, and full of surprises — this 2-mile route includes wide multi-use paths, prehistoric landscapes, and even a giant dragonfly sculpture! Climb to the “Top o’ the World” for sweeping winter views across Derbyshire.

Rowthorne Trail Loop – 3.4 miles

Ideal for walkers and beginner cyclists, this route combines former railway paths with quiet lanes through woodland and countryside. Discover Nature’s Friends as you go, and take in the peace of this lesser-known trail that connects to the Phoenix Greenways.

Silverhill Wood Loop – 3.9 miles

One for dog walkers and adventure seekers alike! Start at the Teversal Trail Visitor Centre, visit the sites of two former collieries, and climb to one of Nottinghamshire’s highest points (204m) to meet the iconic miner statue watching over the land.
