For nearly 50 years, Junction Arts has been a creative heartbeat of Bolsover, so it felt especially fitting when the organisation was recognised with the Putting Bolsover on the Map Award at this year’s Best of Bolsover Awards.
“Winning this award is a real honour and a meaningful moment for our team. It recognises not just the work we’ve done, but the values we hold, that the work we do is by, with and for our communities. For us, it’s a celebration of the people and places we work with every day, and the belief that culture can be a powerful force for connection, pride and change,” shared Emily Bowman.
The award was made even more special by the fact it was voted for by the community themselves.
“It reinforces that what we’re building together (often quietly, and from the ground up) is being seen and valued. We’re incredibly proud, and it means so much more that this award was voted for by our community.”
Creativity at the heart of community
Junction Arts’ mission has always been clear: to use arts and culture to bring people together, celebrate identity, and spark positive change. From festivals and heritage projects to public art and creative workshops, their work makes creativity accessible to all, regardless of background.
“In Bolsover, this work is especially important. It helps build local pride, gives people a platform to share their stories, and creates opportunities for learning, wellbeing and connection. Culture is a powerful way to unlock potential, and in a place like Bolsover, rich in history and talent, it’s helping shape a more vibrant, inclusive and confident future.”
A proud history of resilience and creativity
Founded in South Normanton in 1976, Junction Arts was born during a time of huge change for the region as the mining industry began to decline. What started as a passionate group of locals with a “bit of an idea” grew into a movement that used art as a way to bring joy, connection, and pride back into communities.
From giant puppets on motorway bridges to lantern parades and open-air theatre, their work has always been about more than the art itself, it’s about telling stories, celebrating identity, and creating moments of togetherness. Nearly five decades later, that same belief still drives the organisation.
Projects that light up Bolsover
Among many achievements, the Bolsover Lantern Parade stands as a shining example of Junction Arts’ legacy. Now in its 32nd year, it has become a much-loved tradition that brings hundreds of people together each winter.
More recently, Bright Winter Nights has shown how tradition and innovation can combine, using light, sound, projection, and digital storytelling to reach new audiences while staying true to their community roots.
Partnerships have been key to this success, including Bolsover Castle’s support in bringing ambitious creative ideas to life.
Looking ahead to 50 years
As Junction Arts prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026, the future looks just as bright. The team are planning a year of storytelling, reflection, and celebration, alongside the exciting opportunity to present their work on an international stage at the ICAF (International Community Arts Festival) in Rotterdam.
Despite new stages and new audiences, their roots remain firmly in Bolsover.
“Bolsover isn’t just the backdrop to our work, it’s the reason for it. And we’re proud to still be here, working hand-in-hand with our brilliant community. Here’s to the next 50 years!”
Congratulations to Junction Arts on their well-deserved award and for continuing to put Bolsover on the map through creativity, community, and connection.
