This historic and traditional English town is brimming with heritage and boasts an imposing castle, independent shops and friendly places to eat and drink.
Check out our guide on how to spend 48 hours in Bolsover and discover everything from circular walks to amazing attractions with breathtaking views, peaceful beauty spots and hidden courtyard.
A market town with a rich and interesting history, Bolsover is a place full of hidden gems just waiting to be uncovered.
The town is perhaps best known for the fairy-tale Bolsover Castle, which stands high above the town. Even though it looks like a castle, it's actually an elegant 17th century mansion that was designed to entertain and impress!
Seemingly hidden away as you approach but once inside you can spend the day exploring rooms and the old ruins discovering hidden places. The castle includes an impressive wall walk with panoramic views, an indoor Riding School (which hosts spectacular dressage displays), and numerous impressive rooms.
Other nearby attractions include the National Trust's Hardwick Hall, an Elizabethan gem built by the formidable Bess of Hardwick in the 1500s, and Creswell Crags, which charts life during the last Ice Age and is home to Britain's only Ice Age cave art!
Bolsover is also bursting with specialist shops and vibrant events, including the annual Bolsover Food and Drink Festival. The town has a host of independent cafes, pubs and restaurants serving local produce, plus the unique shopping court of Old Bolsover Yard where you can discover hidden gems ranging from local beer to floristry and crafts.
On the first Saturday of the month, local artisans pour into the Town Centre to showcase their unique crafts along with talented performers entertaining you while you browse.
Launched in 2022 with less than a dozen stalls, the artisan market has rapidly evolved into a thriving community event boasting a full capacity of 60+ traders at each gathering.
The market showcases a selection of high-quality makers, independent traders and small businesses, becoming a hub for exceptional products and handmade treasures ranging from exquisite paintings to bespoke jewellery. Culinary delights and entertainment enhance the experience.
