EASTER WEEKEND ITINERARY: DISCOVER BOLSOVER, NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE AND NORTH NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

This suggested itinerary has got a bit of everything — heritage, nature, food, trails, Easter fun — perfect for a local staycation or visitors looking for an easy getaway.





🐇 Good Friday – April 18th: Castles & Countryside

Morning:

  • Start at Bolsover Castle (English Heritage)

    Easter Adventure Quest on-site!

    Explore the fairy tale castle ruins, stunning views, and take part in a fun Easter trail for kids. Grab a coffee at the on-site café before setting off.

Midday:

  • Picnic & Playtime at Carr Vale Nature Reserve

    Just a short walk or drive from the castle. Bring a packed lunch and enjoy some downtime in nature. Great for wildlife spotting and peaceful trail walking.

Afternoon:

  • Walk a section of the Archaeological Way

    A scenic route that links Bolsover to Pleasley and beyond, full of heritage and open space. Perfect for a gentle family walk or longer trek.



🐣 Easter Saturday – April 19th: Nature, Nostalgia & Local Gems

Morning:

  • Visit Creswell Crags

    Prehistoric caves, Easter crafts, and family-friendly exhibitions. Guided cave tours available — book in advance!

Midday:

  • Lunch at the Harley Gallery & Welbeck Farm Shop

    Try the award-winning café and pick up local treats. Pop into the gallery to see contemporary art and handmade crafts.

Afternoon:

  • Explore Clumber Park (National Trust)

    Rent bikes, wander the lake, or relax with an ice cream. Easter-themed activities usually run throughout the weekend.

    Take part in a series of exciting workshops across the town. Visitors can make a buckle with artist Lise Bennett or a mini banner with artist Ursula Rae – you can even work together to make a brand new willow sculpture with artist Maggie Cooper in Old Bolsover Yard. There will be a display of lanterns from the Bolsover Lantern Parade to showcase the talent of local people and a Teenage Market, giving young people the opportunity to make and sell their work. Drop in for a film screening in the library or walk to the Parish Rooms to see a display of work and workshops by the Creative Women’s Network.


🥚 Easter Sunday – April 20th: Eggs, Estates & Easter Magic

Morning:

  • Hardwick Hall (National Trust)

    Easter Egg Hunt & Spring Garden Walks

    Explore the grand halls, stroll through daffodil-filled gardens, and complete the family trail. Don’t forget a photo in front of the old hall ruins!

Midday:

  • Sunday Roast at The Schoolhouse, South Normanton or The Greendale Oak, Cuckney

    Book ahead — Easter Sunday lunch is popular!

Afternoon:

  • Leisurely walk or cycle on the Teversal Trail or Five Pits Trail

    Great for walking off lunch and soaking in the springtime views across reclaimed colliery landscapes.
